Simon Hallam, a plasterer from the northern New South Wales town of Inverell, fell while 'planking' on the boot of a fast-moving car and is now in an induced coma in an intensive care unit.
Doctors at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, 100 miles north of Sydney, have told the young man's family that they cannot guarantee he will ever recover from the accident.
Police said witnesses had told them that Mr Hallam was attempting to 'plank' - lie prone, face down - on the boot of a sedan car moments before he fell heavily, striking his head.
'We have spoken today with witnesses who have reported the young man was in fact "planking", or similar to it,' said a police spokesman.
Mr Hallam's distraught father told Melbourne's Sun-Herald newspaper that doctors had told the family that 'it's just day-by-day - that's all we know'.
