In the firing line: Moment sharp-suited gunman shoots at Ukrainians protesting at Russia's war victory celebrations - 10th May 2011

This is the dramatic moment a man pulls a gun on a Ukrainian nationalist protester as tensions boil over on Victory Day in the Ukraine.

The shady figure, wearing a suit and hiding behind sunglasses, is a pro-Russian activist who was being prevented from reaching a landmark in the western city of Lviv to celebrate the occasion.

In Moscow, the huge annual parade featuring tens of thousands of soldiers and Russian armoury was taking place to commemorate the 66th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

But in the Ukraine, tensions have been running high since President Viktor Yanukovych said he would allow the hammer-and-sickle banners to be hung from government buildings in the former Soviet republic.

Nationalists had pledged to make their feelings known and in Lviv, they attacked the Russian supporters - wearing St George ribbons - as they headed to the Hill Of Glory war memorial.

It was when violence broke out between the groups that a photographer captured the gunman firing into the mainly youthful Ukrainians.

The nationalist group, Svoboda, claimed on its website that one of its members was wounded in the leg in the incident.

The victim's friends, many of whom were masked, attacked the pro-Russians until police - who were out in force - broke up the fighting. Read More
