The investment group USTC Holdings, LLC, which bought Xe in December, has created director positions that it wants to fill with high-profile names.
Mr Ashcroft is serving as an independent director for Xe Services, based in Moyock, North Carolina, for an undisclosed sum of money.
The became famous as Blackwater, which provided guards and protection services to the U.S. government in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
The company has been trying to reinvent itself and clean up its image after 17 unarmed Iraqis were shot dead in Baghdad in 2007.
The massacre caused widespread outrage and led to federal charges against several Blackwater guards.
