A mandatory evacuation notice has been issued for 900 homes in Brandon, Man., due to the threat of severe flooding that has sent Canadian troops to areas in western Manitoba. "The evacuation notice has been issued, and now they should start preparing to leave because it's not a drill," said Mayor Shari Decter Hirst.
Evacuations will begin immediately in the area from 4th Street North to 26th Street North, from McDonald Avenue to the Assiniboine River, said a City of Brandon news release on Monday morning.
The area is on the city's north side, but south of the river.
All residents are expected to vacate their properties by 8 p.m. local time.
"They have until 8 o'clock tonight on the 'Flats' of Brandon, which is what we're doing right now first because it's the lowest area," said Decter Hirst."And the folks on the north side of the river will be there probably tomorrow [Tuesday], but they might as well start making those arrangements now."
While it's a precautionary evacuation, there is great concern about the coming crest, which is expected to arrive on Thursday. (read more)
